Breast Procedures

Mastopexy

Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure aimed at lifting and reshaping sagging breasts. It involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to improve breast contour and elevation. This procedure can be beneficial for women who experience sagging breasts due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or aging.

During your consultation with Dr. Nguyen, he will discuss your individual needs, expectations, and potential risks associated with the procedure.

Techniques

Breast lift techniques can vary depending on factors such as the degree of ptosis (sagging), the patient's anatomy, and the desired outcome. Here are some common techniques used in breast lift surgery:

  1. Anchor (Inverted-T) Technique: This is one of the most common techniques used for breast lifts. It involves making an incision around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease, forming an anchor shape. This technique allows for significant lifting and reshaping of the breast tissue.
  2. Lollipop (Vertical) Technique: In this technique, the incisions are made around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, resembling a lollipop shape. It is often used for moderate breast ptosis and provides less scarring compared to the anchor technique.
  3. Donut (Peri-areolar) Technique: This technique involves making a circular incision around the edge of the areola. It is suitable for mild cases of ptosis and results in minimal scarring. However, it may not be as effective for more significant breast sagging.
  4. Crescent Technique: This technique involves making a small incision along the upper half of the areola, allowing for minor adjustments in breast position. It is typically used in combination with other techniques for minimal lifting needs.
  5. Internal Suspension Techniques: Some surgeons may use internal sutures or supportive materials (like mesh) to provide additional support and longevity to the lift. These techniques are often used in conjunction with external incisions to achieve optimal results.

During your consultation with Dr. Nguyen, he will assess your breast anatomy, discuss your goals, and recommend the most suitable technique for your individual needs. Each technique has its advantages and limitations, so it's essential to have a thorough discussion to ensure you understand the potential outcomes and risks associated with the chosen approach.

Benefits

Techniques

Techniques

A breast lift, or mastopexy, offers several benefits for individuals experiencing sagging or drooping breasts:

  1. Improved Breast Shape: A breast lift can restore a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing breast shape by lifting the breasts to a higher position on the chest. This can enhance the overall appearance of the breasts and improve symmetry.
  2. Enhanced Breast Firmness: Sagging breasts often lose their firmness over time due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or aging. A breast lift removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue, resulting in firmer and perkier breasts.
  3. Increased Clothing Options: Many individuals with sagging breasts may feel limited in their clothing choices due to concerns about breast appearance. After a breast lift, patients often find that they can wear a wider variety of clothing styles with confidence, including swimsuits, low-cut tops, and form-fitting outfits.
  4. Boost in Self-Confidence: The improved appearance of the breasts can lead to increased self-esteem and confidence. Patients often report feeling more comfortable and satisfied with their bodies after undergoing a breast lift, which can positively impact various aspects of their lives.
  5. Relief from Physical Discomfort: Sagging breasts can cause physical discomfort, including back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as skin irritation under the breasts. By lifting and reshaping the breasts, a breast lift can alleviate these symptoms and improve overall comfort.
  6. Long-lasting Results: While the aging process and lifestyle factors may continue to affect breast appearance over time, the results of a breast lift are typically long-lasting. Maintaining a stable weight and adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prolong the effects of the surgery.
  7. Correction of Asymmetry: A breast lift can also address breast asymmetry, where one breast is lower or differently shaped than the other. By reshaping and lifting both breasts, a more symmetrical and balanced appearance can be achieved.

It's important to note that while a breast lift can provide significant improvements in breast appearance and self-confidence, it's not a solution for increasing breast size. If a patient desires larger breasts in addition to lifting, they may consider combining a breast lift with breast augmentation using implants.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are just a few commonly asked questions about breast lift surgery. If you have specific concerns or questions, it's best to discuss them with Dr. Nguyen during a consultation.

Mastopexy is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves lifting and reshaping the breasts to give them a more youthful and uplifted appearance. It can also involve repositioning the nipples and areolas if they have become stretched or droopy.

Good candidates for mastopexy are typically women who are bothered by sagging breasts due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or genetics.

During a mastopexy, the surgeon will make incisions on the breasts to remove excess skin, reshape the breast tissue, and reposition the nipples and areolas to a higher, more youthful position. The specific technique used will depend on factors such as the degree of sagging and the patient's aesthetic goals.

Mastopexy is primarily focused on lifting and reshaping the breasts, rather than increasing their size. However, some women may choose to combine mastopexy with breast augmentation (implants or fat transfer) to achieve both lift and increased volume.

Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure but generally takes about one to two weeks. Patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort during the initial recovery period, but these symptoms typically subside over time.
