Cellulite is a depression of any shape or size with a defined edge that is seen on the surface of the skin, typically on the buttocks or thighs. Cellulite is not laxity (the loss of elasticity in skin), nor is it poor skin quality, nor fat. A major underlying cause of cellulite are the “septa” or fibrous bands that tether the skin to the structures below.  Some septa are good and they are important as connective tethers, but some stiffen and shrink over time and lead to the dimples on the surface that we call cellulite.

The opposite is actually true – they are complex 3D, honeycomblike structures of fibrous bands.
